Œ¤‹†•ª–ì My research focuses largely on working out ideas presented by Susanne Langer in "Philosophy in a New Key: A Study in the Symbolism of Reason, Rite, and Art," on examining discursive and presentational forms of meaning and how centers of power and authority persuade, conceal, and deceive to maintain the status quo. This interest developed over the years from observations of how the Christian cross and other key symbols have been appropriated across cultures, languages, and ideologies to support or condemn particular ideas, beliefs, or cultural practices perceived to be (ab)normal. To those ends, I am interested in the signs and symbols that predominate in contemporary society which inform the public discourse and frame contemporary concepts of justice, fairness, loyalty, and patriotism.
